The Derby Pattern 188 Luxury Silk Scarf
A Study in Nostalgia, Craft, and Summer Romance
Can a cup carry the memory of summer?
The Derby Pattern 188 silk scarf began with a porcelain coffee can: English, pink, and impossibly gold. The first time this cup was graciously handed to me, its charm was immediate. There was something both formal and flirtatious about the piece—like bunting in the breeze, or the glint of sunlit showers across polished stone. It made me smile.
It reminded me of honied golden summers I had read about in Blandings Castle by P.G. Wodehouse and The Darling Buds of May by H.E. Bates, where sunshowers meant kisses, and of the fabulous village fetes in the South of England—tea tents, brass bands, all imbued with that wonderful sense of fun and anticipation—the sense, for me, that anything could happen.
Produced in the William Duesbury period by Derby Porcelain in the late 18th century, the cup carries Pattern No. 188: a creamy white ground with a painted golden zig-zag in the Vandyke design, banded by soft lilac-pink and crowned with what reminded me of miniature tiaras and bees.
It is elegant, yes, but not austere. This was the heart of the design—a structure full of celebration.
The scarf that followed was a kind of devotion. Crafted from 100% Mulberry silk twill and finished with hand-rolled hems, it is as much a gesture as a garment.
Golden motifs, drawn directly from the porcelain, form a regal ribbonwork across a glowing center, while droplets of gold echo like sunlight caught in motion. A pink border, confident and lush, holds the whole in a quiet embrace.
It belongs to the Porcelain Collection, which itself heralds a future Longevity Line—a suite of designs dedicated to memory, mastery, and the objects we cherish.
Wear it to a summer garden party. Knot it beneath your chin for a yacht-bound afternoon à la Grace Kelly. Drape it over your shoulders for a dinner date in Central Park. However you style it, let it hold you in that moment: frothy yet composed, romantic yet powerful.
The Derby Pattern 188 scarf is for those who know the strength of gentleness, and the luxury of being utterly, unapologetically moved.
