Northumbria (Double-Sided Silk Satin Scarf) — A Tribute in Motion

I would not have found porcelain if it hadn’t been shown to me. Shown to me with care, patience and generosity.

The Northumbria dish was placed before me like a sentence I didn’t yet know how to read. Chelsea-Derby, 1779, made for the Duke of Northumberland’s second marriage. Its presence was composed, noble: interlaced white florets set in deep cobalt blue, each blossom centred with a gilded dot of light. I didn’t yet understand how rare it was. But I felt it—its stillness, its certainty and the immense care with which it had been made. That care reached through time. And through the person who shared it with me, it reached me.

This scarf is my reply.

The double-sided Northumbria was designed in honour of that moment—of being shown something exquisite and unexpected, and wanting to give something exquisite in return. Its two faces speak in conversation: one side bold and geometric, the other softer, more meditative. Both draw from the original porcelain, but they interpret it differently—like variations on a theme, or memory seen from two directions. One side celebrates the pattern on the edge of the dish, which I reinterpreted. The other is deep blue, bearing the glowing Derby porcelain mark from the dish itself.

Crafted in 100% double-faced silk satin, the scarf measures 160 by 25 cm. The drape is liquid, but assured. The silk glows rather than gleams, carrying the weight of its design with ease and grace. When tied, it shifts with the wearer: noble one moment, intimate the next.

I made this piece for men, but truly, it is for anyone who has received something they didn’t expect—beauty, kindness, a path they hadn’t seen.

Northumbria. It is not simply worn. It is received. It’s a gesture. A silk offering shaped by gratitude, precision, and legacy.
